FLUFFERS
by Die Booth
âYouâre a what now?â The reaction was always the same. Derekâs mate, Toby, looked at Derek for confirmation, and Derek nodded and hid a smirk in a gulp of his pint. âWhat, like, with men?â
Toby sounded so fascinated and downright envious that Mike couldnât help but grin, too, saying, âActually, Iâm the only guy on my team. Itâs kinda a female dominated profession.â
âYou donât say.â Toby looked at Derek again. âAnd you donât mind?â he asked him.
âWell, Iâm not ecstatic about him working nights all the time, but a jobâs a job, hey. You know what they sayâitâs a dirty job, but someoneâs got to do it. And it is a really dirty job.â âDirtyâ stretched salaciously on Derekâs tongue and for a moment Mike forgot about the bar and the drinks and the music pounding from the speakers.
âNah.â Tobyâs tone snapped his attention back: the game was very definitely up. âYouâre messing with me.â
Derek started to laugh then, and Mike said, âIâm not lying though. Itâs all true. Iâm a fluffer. Not a porn one, mind, you mucky-minded git.â
âGo on. Enlighten me.â
It wasnât the first thing Mike wanted to talk about on one of his nights off, but it always seemed to come up, especially with new people. And truth be told, he didnât hate his job. âYou know the people who clean the Tube tunnels?â
âThe actual tunnels, not the trains? People clean them?â Toby raised his eyebrows. âDonât they have machines for that by now?â
Mike shook his head. Resisted making a joke about how the tunnels get cleaned more than the carriages do. âNope. Just us. Every night, by hand. We come in on the last train and leave on the first.â
âEvery night?â Toby sounded horrified.
âWell, not the same team every night. We do shifts. Thereâs bloody miles of track to cover, thereâs loads of us do it.â
âIâve lived here six years, and Iâve never heard of it before.â The fascination was back in his voice again, but a bit more aghast this time.
âWell. Itâs not the sexiest job in the world I guess.â He only realised when Derek nearly spat out a mouthful of beer what heâd just said.
â
âGood break?â Jocelyn asked.
The distant rumble of the last train receded, hollowing out the chatter on the platform, making it sound hushed even though it wasnât. It used to be weird at first. Now, Mike was accustomed to it. Mostly. âYeah, not bad.â
âGet up to much?â
He pulled his kit from his work bag, the bright orange of the jumpsuit glaring under the yellow platform lighting. âNah. Just went out for drinks on Friday.â
âAnywhere nice?â
Gaze fixed on the mosaic tiles of the station wall, he pulled off his hoodie and jeans. âJust Delta.â He managed to get one foot into a leg of his jumpsuit before the predictable wolf-whistle rang out. Mike smiled.
âLook at them thick thighs! If I was thirty years younger.â
âYouâre beautiful, Margie, but youâre not my type.â He called over his shoulder, answered by Margieâs wicked cackle.
