FLUFFERS

by Die Booth

“You’re a what now?” The reaction was always the same. Derek’s mate, Toby, looked at Derek for confirmation, and Derek nodded and hid a smirk in a gulp of his pint. “What, like, with men?”

Toby sounded so fascinated and downright envious that Mike couldn’t help but grin, too, saying, “Actually, I’m the only guy on my team. It’s kinda a female dominated profession.”

“You don’t say.” Toby looked at Derek again. “And you don’t mind?” he asked him.

“Well, I’m not ecstatic about him working nights all the time, but a job’s a job, hey. You know what they say–it’s a dirty job, but someone’s got to do it. And it is a really dirty job.” ‘Dirty’ stretched salaciously on Derek’s tongue and for a moment Mike forgot about the bar and the drinks and the music pounding from the speakers.

“Nah.” Toby’s tone snapped his attention back: the game was very definitely up. “You’re messing with me.”

Derek started to laugh then, and Mike said, “I’m not lying though. It’s all true. I’m a fluffer. Not a porn one, mind, you mucky-minded git.”

“Go on. Enlighten me.”

It wasn’t the first thing Mike wanted to talk about on one of his nights off, but it always seemed to come up, especially with new people. And truth be told, he didn’t hate his job. “You know the people who clean the Tube tunnels?”

“The actual tunnels, not the trains? People clean them?” Toby raised his eyebrows. “Don’t they have machines for that by now?”

Mike shook his head. Resisted making a joke about how the tunnels get cleaned more than the carriages do. “Nope. Just us. Every night, by hand. We come in on the last train and leave on the first.”

“Every night?” Toby sounded horrified.

“Well, not the same team every night. We do shifts. There’s bloody miles of track to cover, there’s loads of us do it.”

“I’ve lived here six years, and I’ve never heard of it before.” The fascination was back in his voice again, but a bit more aghast this time.

“Well. It’s not the sexiest job in the world I guess.” He only realised when Derek nearly spat out a mouthful of beer what he’d just said.

“Good break?” Jocelyn asked.

The distant rumble of the last train receded, hollowing out the chatter on the platform, making it sound hushed even though it wasn’t. It used to be weird at first. Now, Mike was accustomed to it. Mostly. “Yeah, not bad.”

“Get up to much?”

He pulled his kit from his work bag, the bright orange of the jumpsuit glaring under the yellow platform lighting. “Nah. Just went out for drinks on Friday.”

“Anywhere nice?”

Gaze fixed on the mosaic tiles of the station wall, he pulled off his hoodie and jeans. “Just Delta.” He managed to get one foot into a leg of his jumpsuit before the predictable wolf-whistle rang out. Mike smiled.

“Look at them thick thighs! If I was thirty years younger.”

“You’re beautiful, Margie, but you’re not my type.” He called over his shoulder, answered by Margie’s wicked cackle.
